Anantnag: Ten candidates, including Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti and Congress state chief G A Mir, on Wednesday filed the nomination papers for upcoming Parliamentary election from Anantnag Lok Sabha seat.
With this, the total number of candidates in the fray from Anantnag Parliamentary constituency has reacted to 16 so far.
“The nomination was filed by Mehbooba Mufti of PDP, Ghulam Ahmad Mir of Congress, Hassnain Masoodi of National Conference, Zaffar Ali of Jammu Kashmir People’s Conference, Mirza Sajad Hussain Beigh of Janata Dal United, Sanjay Kumar Dhar of Manav Adhikar Party and Shamas Khwaja, Imtiyaz Ahmad Rather, Gh Mohammad Wani, Riyaz Ahmad Bhat all independents,” an official spokesperson said.
He said the number of nominations filed for the Constituency so far reached to 16.
The last date for filing of nominations is Thursday, while scrutiny of nominations will be held on April 5. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 8 for Anantnag LS seat, where polling will be held in three phases — April 23, April 29, May 6.
The Anantnag Lok Sabha seat fell vacant as Ms Mehbooba, who was the sitting MP from Anantnag LS seat, resign and took over as the chief minister of the state after the death of her father Mufti Mohammad Syed in 2016. PDP patron and Ms Mufti’s father Mufti Mohammad Syed, who was the then chief minister of the J&K, died on January 7, 2016 at the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi.
The bypoll to fill the seat could not take place as poll officials felt the security situation was not conducive, leaving the parliamentary constituency unrepresented for about three years.
