Srinagar: A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in north Kashmir district of Bandipora.
Meanwhile, a police official said that security forces, with the help of locals, rescued one of the two civilians held ‘hostage’ by militants at the encounter site.
Official sources said that following specific information about presence of militants, a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police, Army and CRPF at Mir Mohalla of Hajin in Bandipora on Thursday.
However, when security forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there, fired at them with automatic weapons. “The security forces retaliated, ensuing in an encounter,” they said, adding one militant was killed in the exchange of fire.
“The operation was still going on when the reports last came in,” they added.
“Two civilians were held hostage by militants. With the assistance of security forces, Police and community members, one civilian has been rescued safely while efforts are on to rescue another civilian reportedly a minor,” a police official said.
Meanwhile, scores of protestors hit the streets and tried to march toward the encounter site at Hajin. But, security forces deployed in the area stopped them from moving ahead. As the protestors didn’t back down, security forces burst teargas shells and fired pellets to disperse the demonstrators, who were pelting stones.
