New Delhi: A day after the Election Commission announced that the assembly polls will not be held in Jammu and Kashmir along with Lok Sabha polls, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Monday demanded the poll body to reconsider the decision and announce the poll dates simultaneously.
?It is perplexing how the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir is good for the conduct of the Lok Sabha elections and not for the assembly elections which are also due?, said party’s polit bureau in a statement.
Election Commission on Sunday announced the schedule for Lok Sabha polls which will be held from April 12 to May 11.
According to the Commission, elections for six Lok Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in five phases.
Jammu and Kashmir has been under Governor’s rule after the BJP ended support to the alliance government led by PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti.
With elections due in May, it was expected that the Commission will announce the assembly polls along with Lok Sabha polls, though it didn’t, citing security situations in the state.
The CP(M) pointed out that earlier the Union Home Minister had assured that assembly elections will also be held.
?All the non-BJP political parties in Jammu and Kashmir in their meeting with the full election commission when it visited the state appealed for the holding of simultaneous election?, the Left party said.
Earlier, former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Ms Mufti criticised Commission’s decision and urged the poll body to conduct the elections simultaneously.
