Kashmiri bound passengers on Srinagar-Jammu National highway allege โ€˜extortionโ€™ in the name of fares

Srinagar: A day after Advisor to Governor Khurshid A Ganai asked Airlines to cap airline prices; the Kashmir bound passengers traveling via road said that โ€œextortionโ€ in the name of fares of Kashmiri bound passengers on bad weather days is not limited to air as people traveling by road face the same problems.

A group of passengers told QNS that the Tavera-Sumo and Tempo traveler services charge 1500 hundred rupees for each passenger from Jammu to Srinagar and 1200 rupees from Jammu to Banihal against the normal rate of 400-500.

They also alleged that there is no rate list in place and no regulations by the traffic department. They requested the authorities to look into the matter.

The request came soon after A

dvisor Ganai informed the managers of Airlines that the practice of charging exorbitant prices in the event of road closure and cancellation of flights due to inclement weather, was sheer exploitation of consumers which tantamount to violation of relevant laws meant for protection of the consumers and warned the airlines of legal action in the matter.
