Srinagar: The night temperature dipped and settled several degree below normal across Kashmir valley, where another spell of snow and rain is predicted from Monday under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance (WD).
The border town of Drass was the coldest place in the region at minus 22.7 degree, followed by Kargil, where the night temperature dipped marginally and settled at minus 16.6 degree.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that fairly widespread rain and snow would occur during the next 24 hours in Kashmir valley under the influence of a WD, which hit the region on Monday evening. “Widespread snow and rain would occur during the subsequent 72 hours from Tuesday,” he said, adding the weather will improve from February 9 onwards.
After witnessing a dip of about 4 degree in the night temperature, people woke up to a chilly and cloudy Monday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar. However, as the day progressed sun came out, brining some relief from chilly weather conditions though ice cold winds continued. The weather again turned overcast and chilly in the evening as a fresh WD hit the region. Against 1.2 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Srinagar was minus 2.4 degree, which is about 2 degree below normal.
He said light to moderate rain or snow would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 5 degree and 1 degree, respectively.
The night temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, dipped about 2 degree from Sunday and settled at minus 8.6 degree, which is a degree below normal. Gulmarg, where ski slopes are covered under several feet of snow, was the only place in the valley where the maximum temperature was 2 degree below freezing point. However, despite chilly weather conditions, the ski resort was packed with tourists, including foreigners, who are enjoying various snow activities, including skiing.
“Gulmarg is known for its internationally acclaimed slopes and the quality of snow. Tourists, particularly adventure lovers, throng to the resort during winters to take part in snow activities,” a hotelier told UNI over the phone.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, was the only place in the valley where the night temperature improved though it still remained over 2 degree below normal. Against minus 9.1 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Pahalgam was minus 8.6 degree.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir, tourist resort of Kukernag dipped and settled at minus 4.4 degree, 3.9 degree and 3.6 degree.
