JRL denounces sedition charges against Kashmiri JNU students

Srinagar: The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik has strongly denounced the sedition charges and filing of charge sheet in 2016 case by the Delhi Police against Kashmiri students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) saying the charges will have serious consequences on the academic and future career of the students.

The Kashmiri students include Aqeeb Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain,Umair Gul, Rayees Rasool, Khalid Bashir, Basharat Ali.

Demanding immediate withdrawal of all charges, the leadership in a statement issued to GNS said the students only participated in the programme organized by JNU Students Union in 2016 to condemn the โ€œundemocraticโ€ act of Government of India under which Muhammad Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail without even informing his family members and โ€œin contravention to all established norms and rulesโ€.

The leaders said booking students in 2019 clearly exhibits the vote bank politics of the ruling dispensation. โ€œTo harass the Kashmiri students pursuing studies outside Jammu and Kashmir is not a new practice. Earlier in many universities and colleges, Kashmiri students have been harassed even beaten up, forcing them to drop the studies incomplete and return home,โ€ they said.

The JRL said that โ€œon one hand, the worst kind of atrocities are being unleashed on the people of Kashmir and on other, the career of Kashmiri students outside the state is being ruined on one pretext or the otherโ€.

The leadership appealed international human rights organizations, ICRC, Asia Watch, Amnesty International and โ€œhumanity loving nationsโ€ to take serious notice of these โ€œnefarious practicesโ€ carried out to ruin the career of Kashmiri students. (GNS)
