Civilian killings: Edu institutions suspend classes

Srinagar: Educational institutions, including Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) in south Kashmir suspended classes on Saturday after seven civilians were killed in security force firing on demonstrators who were pelting stones to disrupt operation against militants in Pulwama today.
Three militants of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), including an Army deserter Zahoor Ahmad Thokar, were killed at Sirnoo in Pulwama today.
Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge at Awantipora to disperse demonstrators who were pelting stones after Pulwama civilian killings. However, IUST immediately suspended classes and closed the main door of the university at Awantipora.
Later students, including women, were allowed to board university buses and leave the campus when situation was brought under control.
Reports of suspension of classes in other educational institutions in south Kashmir were also received. However, educational institutions in Pulwama district remained closed since morning as a precautionary measure following encounter between militants and security forces.
Clashes between students and security forces were also received from Sopore in Baramulla.
