Day chill intensifies due to rain, snow; night temp improves in Kashmir

Srinagar: Chilly weather conditions have intensified during the day as upper reaches received fresh snowfall while light rain lashed plains in Kashmir valley though night temperature improved considerably and settled several degrees above freezing point.
However, people continued to shiver in Ladakh region, where border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region at minus 8.7 degree, followed by Leh at minus 7.4 degree.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that fairly widespread rain and snow would occur at scattered places in Kashmir valley during the next 48 hours under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
After witnessing an improvement of about 3 degree in the night temperature, people woke up to a chilly Monday morning as light rain lashed the summer capital, Srinagar. As the day progressed chill intensified due to overcast conditions, coupled with ice cold winds in Srinagar. Against minus 0.4 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in the summer capital was 2.4 degree, which is about 3 degree above normal.
He said light to moderate rain or snow would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 5 degree and 2 degree, respectively.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which received fresh snowfall since early this morning, was the only place in the valley where the mercury remained below freezing point. Against minus 6.3 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, settled at minus 6 degree, which is about 2 degree below normal.
The mercury at world famous health resort of Pahalgam improved about 3 degree from Sunday and settled at 0.3 degree. The night temperature in the health resort, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, settled about 3 degree above normal. The upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station for Amarnath cave shrine on traditional yatra route, received fresh light to moderate snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni also received fresh snowfall.
Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kukernag also witnessed improvement in night temperatures, which settled at 2.2 degree, 0.8 degree and 1.6 degree, respectively.
