Srinagar: Cold wave tightened its grip as mercury dipped due to open skies across Kashmir valley, where the summer capital, Srinagar, recorded the coldest night of the season so far at minus 2.4 degree.
The border town of Leh was the coldest place in the region at minus 9.3 degree, followed by neighbouring town of Kargil, where the mercury dipped and settled at minus 9 degree.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that weather will remain dry during the next 48 hours in Kashmir, which could result in further dip in the night temperature.
The night temperature at Kargil dipped and settled at minus 9 degree, against minus 8.5 degree recorded on Saturday. Against minus 9.4 degree recorded on Saturday in Leh, the night temperature surged and settled at minus 9.3 degree.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam was the coldest place in the valley. Against minus 5 degree recorded on Saturday, the night temperature in the health resort was minus 5.1 degree, which is about 2 degree below normal.
After witnessing the coldest night of the season so far at minus 2.4 degree in Srinagar, people woke up to a chilly Sunday morning. Taps were frozen at many places in the summer capital, where people, mostly auto-drivers and shopkeepers, could be seen burning wood to keep themselves warm.
The night temperature in Srinagar was over a degree below normal. However, as the day progressed, sun came out though chill continued due to ice cold winds.
There was no respite from chilly weather conditions in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where the mercury dipped and settled at minus 3.4 degree against minus 3.3 degree recorded on Saturday. The temperature at the ski resort was slightly below normal.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir dipped and settled at minus 1.8 degree and minus 2.4 degree, respectively. Drivers were finding it hard to start their vehicles due to sub-zero temperature in the morning at Qazigund and adjoining areas on Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
Tourist resort of Kukernag was the only place in the valley where the night temperature improved though it was still below normal. Against minus 1.3 degree recorded on Saturday, the night temperature in Kukernag was minus 0.8 degree.
