Are we anti-national just because our MLAs stood up to your attempts of defection: Mehbooba

Srinagar: Lashing out at BJP general secretary Ram Madhav for alleging that the PDP-NC alliance was formed at Pakistan’s behest, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti asked β€˜if they were anti-national just because their MLAs had enough integrity to stand up to your (BJP) failed attempts of defection’.
β€œShocked to see baseless allegations against mainstream parties in JK following dictates from Pakistan levelled by @rammadhavbjp ji,” Ms Mehbooba, who is the former chief minister of the state, wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
She said it was sad to see what the political discourse of the country has been reduced to. β€œHow does one define a party’s nationalistic credentials? Nationalistic and patriotic only if you are with the Centre and Pakistan sponsored and anti-nationalistic otherwise?” she asked.
Ms Mehbooab said all mainstream parties in J&K have taken grave risks to bridge the trust deficit that exists between people of the state vis-a-vis the country.
β€œBoth PDP and NC have been allies of BJP at some point. Strange that our credentials weren’t questioned then,” she added.
The PDP president said India is a great country and democracy is a battle of ideas so let’s not make a mockery of those very institutions and people.
The PDP president said her party had aligned with the BJP to change this pernicious mindset.
Undoubtedly, she said Pakistan has an impact on the situation in J&K. But, she said its upto β€˜our country to change that from negative to positive and tread the path that was taken by Vajpayee ji’.
Ms Mehbooba was responding to Mr Madhav allegations that PDP and NC boycotted local body polls last month because they had instructions from across the border. β€œProbably they had fresh instructions from across the border to come together and form government. What they did, prompted the Governor to look into the whole issue,” the BJP national general secretary had said.
