Srinagar: Police on Sunday claimed to have killed two Al Badr militants in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
“Based on a credible input about the presence of militants, a cordon and search operation was launched by Police and security forces at the strike of dawn today in Rebban area of Zainapora in Shopian district,” a police spokesman said.
As the search operation was going on, the search party was fired upon by the hiding militants. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter, he said.
In the ensuing encounter, two militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter and have been identified as Nawaz Ahmad Wagay son of Ghulam Qadir resident of Rebban Zainapora and Yawar Wani son of Ali Mohammad Wani resident of Batnoor Litter Pulwama
“Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. Police has registered a case and initiated investigation in the matter,” the spokesman said, adding that no collateral damage took place during the encounter.
“Citizens are once again requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosives materials if any,” the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of the slain militants in their respective native villages at Reban, Shopian and Bhatnoora, Pulwama.
The slain duo was later laid to rest amid pro-freedom and anti-government slogans.
A complete shutdown was observed in Shopian and Pulwama districts of south Kashmir to mourn the killing of two slain militants.
