Srinagar: Government on Wednesday in a major crackdown arrested dozens of second line separatists leaders ahead of upcoming municipal and panchayat elections, the elections are boycotted for the first time by two largest regional political parties including National Conference and PDP.
Top sources while disclosing this to KNS revealed that dozens of the second line of leaders were in a major crackdown arrested and pushed into lock ups in various police stations and jails in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley. “The second line of the separatist leaders have been arrested ahead of upcoming municipal and panchayat elections to thwart their attempts to launch the anti election campaign”, said the sources.
Government has already restricted the movements of top separatist leaders including Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik from their residential houses.
In view of the boycott of the upcoming municipal and panchayat elections by two largest mainstream political parties National Conference and PDP the government is this time facing a huge challenge in the conduct of a massive election exercise in the state. Those arrested include Hurriyat Conference (G) Spokesman G A Gulzar, Nisar Ahmad Rather, Bashir Ahmad Budgami, Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, Mohammad Yasin Atayee, Ashiq Hussain Narchor and Sartaj Ahmad.
