Srinagar: Expressing happiness that the decision taken by her government to waive off stamp duty on properties owned by women in the Jammu and Kashmir, former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said it is now showing encouraging results.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba said its impact cannot be measured immediately but the fact is it has already made women a major stakeholder in real estate where most of the wealth in our society is parked.
Taking to micro-blogging site twitter Mehbooba said “ Happy to note that the decision taken by my Govt to waive off stamp duty on properties owned by women is showing encouraging results”.
She further tweeted that “ It’s impact cannot be measured immediately. But the fact is it has already made women major stakeholders in real estate where most of the wealth in our society is parked”.
“ It’s social impact will manifest in the stability of marriage and family as women hold the power to negotiate”, she said adding” This will give them more confidence to face the world, fight discrimination and feel socially and economically secure”.
Mehbooba who was the first woman chief minister of the state further said “ It could in a major way neutralize the strong patriarchal set up that dictates the sense of terms in families and create a balanced structure”.
Mehbooba formed a coalition government with the BJP despite differences over several issues, particularly on Article 370. However, she had to resign in June this year after BJP suddenly pulled out from the coalition alleging discrimination with Jammu and Ladakh regions.
