Srinagar: About five persons were injured when security forces burst teargas shells and opened fire to disperse demonstrators who were trying to disrupt the Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at Chowgam in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Saturday.
Official sources said that immediately after CASO was launched at Chowgam, people, mostly hit the streets in the nearby villages raising slogans and pelting stones. Large number of security forces and state police personnel deployed in the area immediately swung into action and resorted to lathicharge which had no impact on demonstrators. Later security forces burst teargas shells and opened fire, they said adding about five persons were injured.
The injured have been admitted to hospital, where the doctors said two of them have received bullet injuries. Clashes were going on when the reports last came in. The authorities have suspended mobile internet in south Kashmir as a precautionary measure.
