After NC, PDP to boycott local bodies, panchayat elections in J&K

Srinagar: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also announced to boycott local bodies and Panchayat elections in the Jammu and Kashmir.

Last week, the National Conference (NC) has decided not to contest any elections in the state until Central Government clear its stand on the issue of Article 35 A and Article 370.

“We will not participate in the polls as prevailing situation in the state was not conducive for such an exercise,” PDP president Mehbooba Mufti told reporters here on Monday afternoon after the party meeting called here.

She said the State and Central Government were not keen to defend the Article 35 A of the constitution which has resulted in insecurity among the population. The PDP urged the Governor administration to review its decision to hold polls to local bodies and Panchayats at this juncture, the former Chief Minister said.

Ms Mehbooba resigned as CM after its allies BJP pulled out from the coalition government in the state. The state is under Governor rule since June 20.

The State Administrative Council (SAC) which met under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik on August 30 had announced to hold UBS and Panchayat elections in first week of October.

However, the NC which had earlier welcomed the decision to hold polls, suddenly announced to boycott elections. The NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah said the party will not participate in any polls until the Centre and State Government clear its position on these Articles.
