Night temp witnesses’ major improvement in Kashmir; snow predicted on higher reaches

Srinagar: After witnessing severe chill due to which water bodies  and taps were frozen from the last couple of days, the night temperature witnessed major improvement and settled above normal due to overcast conditions at most places in Kashmir valley, where isolated very snow is predicted during the next 24 hours.

However, people continued to shiver in Ladakh region, where all the water bodies, including ponds and khuls, remained frozen, affecting normal life.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that isolated very light snow would occur on higher reaches in Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours. “The weather will again turn dry on December 31,” he said.

However, he said 2019 would bring along wet weather under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which originate from Arabian Sea and is approaching the region though Afghanistan and Pakistan, and will hit the state on January 1. “Fairly widespread light rain or snow would occur for five days from January 1 under the influence of the WD,” he added.

Even though there was an improvement of 5 degree from Saturday in the night temperature, Leh was the coldest place in the region at minus 12.2 degree.

He said skies will be mainly clear to generally cloudy during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 4 degree and minus 14 degree, respectively.

After witnessing record breaking night temperature during the next couple of days, the mercury in the summer capital, Srinagar, improved about 5 degree from Saturday and settled at minus 2.4 degree, which is slightly below normal. People woke up to a chilly Sunday morning in the summer capital though as the day progressed sun came out, improving the day temperature. However, Dal Lake and other waterbodies remained frozen in the interior areas. On Saturday, the maximum temperature was about a degree above normal.

He said skies will be mainly clear to generally cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 9 degree and minus 4 degree, respectively.

World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was the coldest place in the valley despite an improvement of 3 degree from Saturday in the night temperature. Against minus 7 degree recorded on Saturday, the night temperature in the ski resort was minus 4 degree, which is over 2 degree below normal.

The night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam also dipped and settled at minus 2.5 degree, against minus 8.3 degree recorded on Saturday. The temperature was about 3 degree above normal in the health resort, which is about 100 km from here in south Kashmir.

The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir, and tourist resort of Kokernag dipped and settled at minus 1.8 degree, 3.4 degree, and minus 2.7 degree, respectively.
